Kelp Lab Core was set up in 2017 by Owen Micklewright after nine years working inside larger contract laboratories. The name comes from a stretch of coastline Owen kayaks regularly, where kelp beds are one of the more reliable indicators of water quality in the area. The founding idea was straightforward: a laboratory that gives clients direct access to the analyst, reports results in plain language, and does not pad turnaround times to manage its own scheduling problems. The first year was mostly water and soil work for two environmental consultancies in the region, which gave the lab a solid grounding in field-to-bench sample handling.
